About Malaysian Maritime Law Association

The Malaysian Maritime Law Association (MMLA) was founded in 1995 by M. Nagarajah . Its purpose is and always has been to promote the study and the advancement of Malaysian maritime and mercantile law and its administration. Other aims of the MMLA include:-


- to promote and consider with foreign and other maritime law associations proposals for the unification of maritime and mercantile law in the practice of different nations:


- to afford opportunities for the discussion and consideration of matters of interests to members of the Association and to undertake or to assist in the preparation and promotion of agreements and arrangements in respect of such matters;


- to collect and circulate statistical and other information and to form a collection of publications and documents of service or of interest to members of the Association;


- to arrange social and recreational activities for members of the Association; and


- to seek affiliation with regional or international bodies with objects similar to the objects of the Association and to participate in the activities of such regional as international bodies. (The text of the constitution will be found hereafter.)

The MMLA is currently headed by Mr Nagarajah Muttiah, an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and whose niche has been found in the practice of maritime and mercantile law.

Membership consists of representatives from the following groups: shipowners, shippers, merchants, manufacturers, insurers, insurance brokers, tug owners, shipbuilders, port and harbour authorities, bankers, classifications societies or other societies or bodies interested in the objects of the Association. The Association also has a number of individual members who may be employees of corporate or institute members or lawyers or others with out a corporate identity.


The MMLA is currently recruiting members to be a part of its team. Every person desiring to become a member of the MMLA shall pay an entrance fee of Ringgit Two Hundred (RM200.00) only and an annual subscription of Ringgit One Hundred (RM100.00) only.
